Putting highlights in your hair is not just a woman thing anymore. More and more men are doing it or having it done at salons. Both sexes highlight for the same reasons, to look younger, to change their look altogether or simply to stay current and fashionable.
So men, if you're not the do it yourself kind of guy, then here is what you do: find pictures of men with the kind of coloring in their hair that you would like in yours and print them out. Then look for some pictures of some styles that you think would look good on you, too. If you see picture of a celebrity whose looks you admire, be sure to remember the name so you can tell the stylist. Take all these pictures and information with you to the stylist so that the two of you can come up with a plan for the best way to highlight and wear your hair.
Always be sure and tell the salon, that you are having your hair highlighted, when making the appointment. And it is best to ask for a little extra time, if you're not sure what you want. In other words, you need to ask for consultation time with the stylist. You don't want to rush the stylist, because the results are better when there is no hurry.
Don't load up on hair products or styling gels before going to the salon. The stylist needs your hair clean and substance free when working. It may be necessary to wash and dry your hair before the stylist can do her work and that will up the price of the visit. So save time and money, and wash your hair before you go.
Talk over your options before hand. If this is your first time, you may want to go with a few subtle highlights in the front of your hair. Later on, at the next appointment, you may want to add in highlighting throughout your hair to work with your natural coloring. Ask you stylist what colors he/she is using. This is in case you decide you want to try it at home with you doing it yourself or your significant other standing in as stylist.
Pay strict attention to the true color of your hair once the stylist is finished. The actual color of the highlights won't show until your hair is dry. If they are too light, then a toner can be added. If they are too dark, then the stylist may have to start all over from the beginning. That's why it is important to talk first and work out a plan first, before proceeding with the coloring.
Once you're done, it will be necessary to take good care of your hair by using a good shampoo and conditioner in order to keep your hair healthy. It is also wise to avoid long exposure to the sun to keep it from bleaching out your color.
